PhD Position

Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung

Dresden

Job offer ref. #07-17004

The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) was founded 1817 and is a member of the Leibniz Association. SGN scientists from 180 nations conduct modern natural history research at 11 research institutions in six federal states. With a dedicated clean room, zoologists at the base in Dresden operate specialized infrastructure for the genetic analyses of museum specimens.
The Senckenberg Natural History Collections in Dresden invite applications in a DFG-funded research project. PhD Position (part-time, 65%)

The position is part of a three-year DFG funded project that is associated with a research cluster of various Senckenberg institutes, and the University of Frankfurt am Main.
The project group at SNSD focuses on phylogeographic patterns and shallow phylogenetic divergences within and among alpine and mountain forest bird species of the larger Eurasian mountain systems, i.e. the Tibetan Plateau, the Central Asian mountains, the Caucasus, the Alps and the Pyrenees.
We aim at identifying intraspecific evolutionary significant units using SNP analysis. NGS-based analyses will be carried out in close cooperation between our team, the population genetics department at SNSD and the deep sequencing centre at TU Dresden. The genetic studies are complemented with species distribution modelling (SDM) and ecological niche modelling (ENM) for target species.

A PhD graduation within the scope of this position is possible.

The research assignment will include

  • Preparation of high quality DNA-extracts for NGS and standard lab procedures (Sanger sequencing of selected neutral and adaptive markers)
  • Statistical analysis of SNP data in close cooperation with our local and international partners
  • Development of present and past scenarios of allopatric, parapatric and sympatric ranges of target taxa using SDM and ENM
  • Co-supervision of master students and compilation of phylogenetic and modelling results for preparation of synthesis papers
  • Preparation of research results for publication, drafting of manuscripts and coordination of submission and review process
  • Presentation of research results at international conferences

From the candidate we expect

  • Master’s degree in biology (or other relevant disciplines)
  • Strong DNA lab skills and expertise in molecular phylogenetic methods (PCR, sequencing)
  • Experience with NGS-based methods, preferably RADseq and SNP analysis
  • Experience with statistical analysis of SNP data or strong motivation to acquire new analytical skills in one of our partner teams
  • Good expertise of a standard approach for SDM and ENM
  • Adequate English language skills and high motivation for scientific publishing
  • Good capacity for teamwork and regular participation in meetings and workshops with associated Senckenberg projects and with partner institutions

Salary and benefits correspond to those of a public service position in Germany (TV-L E 13, 65%) for a period of 3 years preferably starting in April 2018. The SGN supports equal opportunity of men and women and therefore strongly invites women to apply. Equally qualified handicapped applicants will be given preference. The place of employment is in Dresden, Germany. The employer is the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung.
