The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung has an international reputation in all fields of natural history research. It runs research institutes in six federal states and three museums in Germany, and is also custodian of the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Messel.
The Senckenberg Research Institute invites applications for a researcher position in the research project “Naturwaldreservate”. Researcher Position in Biodiversity of Forest Insects (50%)

The SGN is searching for a talented and motivated applicant (m/f) to join the working group of PD Dr. Steffen Pauls in the context of a long-term insect biodiversity project in Hesse’s Strict Forest Reserves (Naturwaldreservate). The project has been running since 1990 and the successful individual will join a highly motivated team of entomologists, evolutionary biologists, forestry scientists and technicians in studying the insect fauna from the Forest Reserves and managed forests.

The position entails the possibility to participate in a PhD programme and conduct research towards a PhD degree.

Specific tasks will include:

  • Contributing to the identification of specimens from selected groups (preferably within Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera-Aculeata, or Heteroptera)
  • Co-ordinating the sorting and identification of specimens from the project with taxonomic experts
  • Maintaining and populating project databases
  • Scientifically analysing existing data series
  • Conducting and co-ordinating field work
  • Contributing to the public outreach of the project

Your profile:

  • M.Sc./Diploma in Biology or related field (Ecology, Entomology, Conservation)
  • Taxonomic skills in a specific group of insects (preferably within Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera-Aculeata, or Heteroptera), and good general knowledge of central European insects
  • Good computer skills including fluency in R and other statistical programmes
  • Interest in combining scientific and co-ordinating tasks
  • Willingness to work both in the field and in the lab
  • Very good written and oral communication skills in English and German

Salary and benefits are according to a part-time public service position in Germany (TV-H E 13, 50%). The position is a 2-year fixed-term post, starting January 1st, 2018. Pending a project extension, funding for the position can be extended beyond the initial contract.
