Founded in 1833 as the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz, the OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH is the largest and most important museum institution in the region. We maintain extensive collections and scholarly archives as well as permanent and special exhibitions in the fields of nature, culture and art history.

OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH is looking for a strategically skilled and integrative scientist with international standing to develop biodiversity research as Head of the Collection of Invertebrates, combining basic collection-based and applied research at an excellent international level. Additionally it is the task to further develop this position with regard to a possible new building for the research centre.

Applicants should have leadership experience and must be familiar with collection-based science.

Scientific excellence and expertise should be evident, for example, in the fields of:

  • Invertebrates
  • Entomology
  • Hymenoptera
  • Biodiversity research

ORGANIZATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

The Centre for Biodiversity Research is part of OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH, including 8 full-time academic employees and 19 research assistants, taxidermists, mediators and facility management staff. Pursuant to its motto “research nature to protect it”, the Centre for Biodiversity Research is dedicated to collect, preserve, research, document, exhibit and impart knowledge about the Austrian plant and animal world, rocks and minerals. It is comprised of 4 departments – botany, geoscience, invertebrates with a particular focus on entomology, and vertebrates. The Centre of Biodiversity Research offers a broad multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of ecology, zoology, evolutionary biology, taxonomy, plant and animal physiology, and conservation biology.

PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Purpose, duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

RESEARCH:

  • Development of the internationally renowned Collection of Invertebrates
  • Lead and substantially contribute to collection-based research and the integration of results into biodiversity research
  • Lead and substantially contribute to analyses and the classification and indexing of organisms, including the analysis of DNA and isotopes
  • Lead and substantially contribute to the writing and publishing of scientific papers on a standard level for high-quality international journals
  • Provide authoritative advice within your area of specialisation
  • Attend and present research at relevant conferences
  • Contribute to exhibitions and the presentation of research to visitors and the interested public

 SERVICE, ADMINISTRATION AND ENGAGEMENT:

  • Scientific and administrative management of the Collection of Invertebrates [4.5 million insects with a focus on hymenoptera, 20,000 microscopic permanent specimens of microorganisms (ciliates, rhizopods, flagellates), 105,000 batches of snails and mussels, etc.]
  • Contribute positively to the lab community by participating in lab meetings and encourage discussions amongst lab members and generally leading by example
  • Engage with the wider community of the School of Biological Sciences
  • Contribute to exhibitions and public relations activities

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • PhD in an area of biological sciences, with extensive pre-doctoral and/or post-doctoral experience of invertebrates and experience in the integration of this discipline into evolutionary biology, biodiversity research or other related fields
  • A record of collections-based research is mandatory
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of animal development and evolution, and the ability to classify and index organisms as well as analyse DNA and isotopes
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse, document and publish results in renowned international journals
  • Excellent written and oral skills and a strong publication record in relevant fields
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail with a demonstrated ability to prioritise your own workload, exercise independent judgment and independent work to meet project deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students and volunteers, with strong interpersonal skills

For this position we offer an attractive salary package according to your qualifications, experience and individual competencies. The base pay is composed of a competitive salary of at least EUR 48,000 gross per year (full time).
