The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) was founded in 1817 and is one of the most important research institutions in the field of biodiversity. At its twelve locations throughout Germany, scientists from more than 40 nations conduct cutting-edge research on an international scale. The Society’s headquarter is in the Main metropolis of Frankfurt in the heart of Germany. This is also where one of the best-known Senckenberg facilities, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum, is located.

The Senckenberg Society for Nature Research (SGN) at the location in Frankfurt am Main is seeking to fill the following position as soon as possible

Programmer (m/f/d) with focus on development and integration of Senckenberg (meta)data portal

(Full Time / Part Time)

Your Task

Our team is involved in the development of national and international research data infrastructures that provide Senckenberg’s natural history collection and research data from the fields of geobiodiversity in a sustainable and interdisciplinary manner. To develop and integrate our research (meta)data management portal which documents the heterogenous research data and corresponding metadata of our scientific work, we are seeking a programmer to further develop this internal database. Our research data management is based in particular on the FAIR principles (https://www.gofair.org/fair-principles).

The aim, and primary task of the advertised position, is to optimize (develop and implement) our infrastructure for the maintenance, annotation, and publication of research data and metadata, including data management plans and Nagoya-related documents.
The position will also involve the development of additions to the existing Senckenberg (meta)data portal functionalities, including tools for linking metadata and image digitization data with the data portal.

The project position is part of our scientific IT with experts in the areas of research data management and service development at the Senckenberg institute in Frankfurt, so that comprehensive training in the relevant subject areas is guaranteed.

Your Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for web development of data management platforms
  • Completed university/technical college degree in computer science, bioinformatics, geoinformatics, or comparable qualification related to web development
  • Good knowledge of software development and extensive practical experience in programming (JavaScript, Python)
  • Good knowledge of established web frameworks (Flask, Django) and ideally experience with maintaining data management platforms (CKAN, Invenio, DSpace, RDMO)
  • Knowledge of APIs and corresponding specifications (OpenAPI)
  • Knowledge of version control and containerization systems (Git, Docker)
  • Good communication skills and the ability to implement software solutions independently, but in close discussion with cooperation partners
  • Fluent communication skills in either German or English
  • Team-oriented and flexible working style, ideally with the willingness to travel on occasion for training, meetings and presentations

Scope of employement: Full Time / Part Time possible

Salary: according to the German collective agreement of the State of Hesse (pay grade E 11, TV-H)
